John Carney
John I. Carney is a former journalist now employed by Bedford County Government. He did not discover oil painting until 2023, after a few years of intentional pen-and-ink drawing preceded by a lifetime of doodling. He sold his second oil painting ever to the Poet Laureate of Tennessee, and recently won first place in an art competition at the First Square Fair in Shelbyville, and second place at the Bedford County Fair. Even so, he is sometimes faced with impostor syndrome surrounded by his talented and more-experienced friends in the Collective. He is still experimenting with subject matter and approaches as he continues to learn, and feels that oil painting has changed his life.
He is the author of a self-published booklet, “Dislike: Faith and Dialogue in the Age of Social Media.”
